My favorite time of the year...when the months have 'R's' because this means oyster season!
Born and raised, at least for the first seven years of my life, on the gulf coast, I was weaned on the fine culinary delights that were born in the ocean. Chief among these for me are raw oysters. No Tabasco, cocktail sauce, lemon, crackers, just pure, delectable, salty mouthfuls of Heaven.
Pat Conroy pretty much nails it here with the exception of the geographical difference:
To describe our growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina, I would have to take you to the marsh on a spring day, flush the great blue heron from its silent occupation, scatter marsh hens as we sink to our knees in mud, open you an oyster with a pocketknife and feed it to you from the shell and say, "There. That taste. That's the taste of my childhood." ~ The Prince of Tides
